The 1/6th Durham Light Infantry battalion arrived in France on 17th April, 1915 to join 151 Brigade of 50th Division which had concentrated around Steenvoorde by 23rd April. This coincided with the Second Battle of Ypres when the enemy used gas for the first time and the division was rushed to the battle front for their first experience of trench warfare. John Emery was killed on 26th April, but the battalion diary for that month is missing so no further information concerning his death. |
